W całej historii chrześcijaństwa istniały grupy kobiet, które prowadziły rozpoznawalnie religijne życie, ale poza tradycyjnymi strukturami monastycznymi. Pomimo pozostawienia znaczącego zapisu dokumentalnego i (w niektórych przypadkach) wizualnego, są one wyraźnie nieobecne w dominującej tradycji naukowej. Definiując i kontekstualizując doświadczenia tych kobiet, możemy zacząć rozumieć, w jaki sposób wpisywały się one w kościelny i świecki krajobraz światów, w których żyły. Nasza konferencja skupia się na nowych badaniach dotyczących nieklasztornych kobiet zakonnych, w tym (ale nie tylko) beguinek, bizzoche, tercjarek, pinzochere, kanoniczek i ascetek domowych. Wykraczając poza ograniczenia narzucone przez geografię czy okres, możemy zacząć myśleć o związkach, jakie istniały między tymi kobietami a społeczeństwem, zakonnicami klauzurowymi czy klerykami. Konferencja odbędzie się osobiście na Uniwersytecie w Toronto, w dniach 18-20 maja 2023 roku. Osoby, które nie mogą być obecne w Toronto w tych dniach, mogą uczestniczyć w konferencji wirtualnie i zadawać pytania poprzez czat.
